Race to the Bottom (Halliburton Moves to Dubai)
Okay, I lied. I guess I am posting today.
Remember how a recent Detroit News editorial implied that Comerica moved its headquarters from Detroit to Texas because Texas "is a right-to-work state with just 5 percent of employees unionized"?
Well, it turns out that Halliburton has opted to move its headquarters from Texas to Dubai. The Detroit News asserts that Comerica moved its headquarters from Michigan to Texas because the latter state is more "business friendly." Using their logic, does that mean that Halliburton moved because the UAE is more "business friendly" than Texas?
The problem with the Detroit News' logic is that there's always going to be someone who can reduce wages and cut benefits more than we can. Is that really the kind of state we want to live in?
